NSW Companion Card
#assistance #carers #support #companioncard

The NSW Companion Card program is for people with significant and permanent disability who have a lifelong need for a high level of care to participate in community events and activities. The Companion Card allows a person’s carer free entry into participating venues and events.
Am I eligible?
When applying for a Companion Card you will be assessed against the eligibility criteria. You may be eligible for a Companion Card if:
- you are an Australian citizen or resident, and live in NSW; and
- you are a person with a significant and permanent disability; and
- you are unable to participate at most community venues or activities without attendant care support;
and aids and other technologies do not meet your attendant care needs; and your need for this level of
attendant care will be life-long.

This tool is a short series of questions which will help you to understand the eligibility criteria for Companion Card and how it applies to your situation.
How do I determine if my need for a carer to access the community is permanent?
Having a permanent need for a carer means:
- you are unable to access the community independently in most situations
- your need for a carer in the community is ongoing and not episodic aids and equipment do not replace
your need for a carer in the community
- the type of care you require is more than social support and supervision
Companion Card and the NDIS
Not everyone who receives NDIS funding will be eligible for a Companion Card.
Only people who will require a high level of support for the rest of their life are eligible for a Companion Card. Some people who get support from the NDIS may need a high level of support now, but may need less help in the future as they learn to become more independent.
If you have an NDIS plan and would like to apply for a Companion Card it is important that you still send any copies of reports you might have about your disability as this will help assess your application.
In your application you can report about the help you need now, but also remember to report why you will need a high level of support for the rest of your life.
